European Higher Education Interoperability Framework (HEIF)

Abstract

Universities across Europe are building better digital connections, but students still face barriers when moving between institutions. The European Higher Education Interoperability Framework tackles this head-on.

This comprehensive guide emerged from real-world testing by over 40 European University alliances. It covers eight crucial scenarios in a student’s journey – from discovering courses to earning recognised credentials.
The framework isn’t theoretical. It’s built from practical experiences and feedback from 80+ experts. Universities can use it to assess their current systems and plan improvements.

Key recommendations include using common vocabularies, sharing metadata instead of full datasets, and connecting to existing European services like eduGAIN. The framework also provides detailed technical blueprints and data standards.

The result? Students can move between universities more easily. Their achievements get recognised everywhere. Higher education becomes truly borderless.
